Your October Cruise Planner

Use the month as a four-week project. Each week has one or two decisions; by Halloween you can have a cruise booked or a short list ready for Wave Season.

WeekDecideTips
Week 1 (Oct 1–7)When can you travel, for how long, and with whom?Count travel days to and from the port. Check school calendars and passport expiry dates.
Week 2 (Oct 8–14)Which region and what style of ship?Caribbean, Alaska, Europe or farther afield; big resort ship, mid-size premium, river or small luxury.
Week 3 (Oct 15–21)Which cabin, and what is the total cost?Compare fares plus drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi, flights and hotels. Ask what each fare includes.
Week 4 (Oct 22–31)Book, or set your short listPay the deposit, buy insurance, then plan flights and pre-cruise nights.

Week by Week, in More Detail

Week 1: The basics

Settle the travel window and budget first; they rule out more options than anything else. Make sure everyone’s passport is valid well beyond your return date, and renew now if not. If anyone in your group has mobility needs or dietary requirements, note them early.

Week 2: Where and on what

Choose the region and season together, because some regions sail only part of the year. Then think about ship style: a lively resort ship, a calmer premium ship, a river ship or a small luxury ship are very different holidays. First-timers can read First Time Cruise for an overview.

Week 3: Cabins and cost

Choose the cabin category and location, then compare total trip cost across two or three options. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can do this side by side for you.

Week 4: Book and follow through

Once you have booked, buy travel insurance, arrange flights and add a pre-cruise hotel night if you are flying. Download the cruise line’s app and note the final payment date. Cruising Checklist has printable checklists for documents and packing.

If You Are Not Ready to Book

That is fine. Finish October with a short list: two or three specific sailings, the cabin category you want and your budget. Then watch for promotions as Wave Season begins in January, with WaveSeason.com as your guide to live offers. When a good offer appears for a sailing on your list, you can act the same day.

Planning Questions

How far ahead should I book a cruise?

For peak summer, holidays, suites and popular new ships, booking a year or more ahead gives the best choice. For flexible travelers on shorter Caribbean sailings, booking a few months ahead can work well.

What deposit is usually required?

It varies by line, fare type and voyage length, and some promotions change the deposit. Your quote will show the deposit and the final payment date.

When should I buy travel insurance?

Soon after paying your deposit, because some benefits, such as pre-existing condition waivers, may depend on buying within a set time of your first payment. Read the policy terms.
