National Cruise Vacation Month falls in one of the most beautiful cruise seasons of all. From late September into October, Canada and New England voyages sail past hills turning red and gold, with harbor towns, lighthouses and lobster dinners along the way.
These itineraries usually run between the US Northeast and Canada, often from New York, Boston or Quebec City, with calls in ports such as Bar Harbor, Portland, Halifax, Saint John, Charlottetown and Sydney, Nova Scotia. Some sail up the St. Lawrence River to Quebec City and Montreal. One-way voyages are common, and lines adjust their routes each year, so check the current schedule for your dates.
Highlights of a Fall Foliage Cruise

Quebec City
A walled, French-speaking old town above the St. Lawrence, often the start or end of a voyage.

New England harbors
Gilded Age mansions in Newport, Acadia National Park from Bar Harbor, and Boston’s Freedom Trail.

Atlantic Canada
Halifax’s waterfront, Prince Edward Island’s farmland and the fishing villages of Nova Scotia.
When the Color Peaks
Fall color moves from north to south and from higher ground to the coast. Inland and northern areas often change first, from late September, while coastal towns may peak later in October. Exact timing changes from year to year with the weather, so no cruise can promise peak color on a given day; an early-to-mid October sailing gives a good chance of seeing plenty of it.
Days can be crisp and evenings cold at sea. Pack layers, a warm jacket and comfortable walking shoes. Cruising Checklist has a cool-weather packing list.

Other Great October Cruises
- The Mediterranean in autumn: warm seas, softer heat and fewer crowds in port. Our sister site Cruising Europe covers European cruising.
- Repositioning voyages: ships move from Europe and Alaska toward the Caribbean, Asia and Australia, creating long one-way voyages with many sea days.
- The Caribbean: the Atlantic hurricane season officially runs to November 30, and lines adjust routes around storms, so an October Caribbean cruise usually sails, sometimes with a changed port.
- Alaska: the season has ended by October; plan next year’s Alaska voyage now instead.
Planning Next Year’s Foliage Cruise
Canada and New England sailings are concentrated in a short window, so the best-located cabins on early-to-mid October departures tend to go early. If you are reading this during this year’s National Cruise Vacation Month, it is a good moment to look at next autumn’s schedule. One-way voyages need flights into one city and home from another, and border crossings between the United States and Canada mean everyone needs a valid passport. A night in Boston, New York, Quebec City or Montreal before sailing makes the start relaxed.
